We are having gorgeous weather this weekend, which means a lot of time outdoors, which means the garden is getting some much needed attention!

But first a seed update!
The artichokes have gotten big enough to be transfered to pots. The physallis are still looking quite small and spinky, so they stayed in the seedling greenhouse, where they are now joined by brussel sprouts. The tomatoes and leeks are happily growing in their eggshells, and today I started a second batch of leeks and a first batch of turnip seeds to germinate. My house is being taken over by seedlings!
They start off on top of the washing machine. These are leeks and turnips. Once they sprout they are moved to the bathroom window, where they can get some sun.
Here we have tomatoes and leeks, as well as physallis and brussel sprouts in the incubator. When they graduate to pots, they're moved to the living room window. These are the only two windows in the house too high for the cat to jump into.
From here they'll move to the greenhouse. Its getting pretty toasty in there, with all this sunshine!

I cut back the blackberry vines, which are terribly overgrown.
This is the 'after' picture, so you can just imagine what they looked like before! And the thorns on these monsters go right through gardening gloves. Right through. Seeing as my hands already looked like I'd been in a catfight, I went ahead and pruned all the rose bushes, too. And cut back the elephant grass.

But it was the vegetable plot that got the most attention. It has been slightly enlarged, tilled, enriched with compost, and tilled again.

On the far side of the vegetable boxes is the strawberry patch, which is in the process of also being enlarged, and this year we have purchased 4 new boxes, which will line the other side of the strawberry patch, framing it nicely. I'll take a picture when we're finished...

I dug up the dead parsley and dill, but it's still too early to put in the new seeds. The parsley will be planted in my vertical garden this year, but the dill grows too tall. My perennial herbs have been transfered to a window box, so the vertical garden is official started!
Thyme and chives: the first of 12 boxes is full! I think I will start seeds in the other boxes and let them get started in the greenhouse, until temperatures allow them to be mounted on the wall. My plans for the vertical garden include lettuces, radishes, spinach and herbs.

There is so much more to do, but we ran out of energy and had to leave the rest for another day. This is the busiest time of year for gardening, so I'm hoping the nice weather sticks around for the next couple of weekends, until the majority of the planting is done.

Have you gotten started in your garden yet?
