May is well under way, and the planting season is almost finished. Our vertical garden, for instance, is now complete!
On the top row are the herbs: parsley, basil, cilantro, thyme and chives. The middle row contains spinach and radishes. You see the big empty patches in one of the radish boxes? We've already picked about 2 dozen of these little lovelies... mmmmmm. On the bottom row we have our four boxes of lettuce, which are coming along slowly but surely.  Pay no attention to the potted plants lined up along the ground... They are flowers for our front garden, which we are in the middle of landscaping. Nothing to eat here, folks. Move along.

This verticle garden has saved so much space in the veggie plot, and so far we're really pleased with the results. I've been recommending vertical gardening to several friends and acquaintances who say they have no space for growing vegetables. It really does work!

The greenhouse is complete, also. I mean, obviously I have to transplant those Brussel sprouts from the pots to their outdoor home, but it is still a little cold and windy, so I keep putting it off.

What I have done is to harvest out about half of the spinach, so I had space to plant the cucumber seedlings behind them.
I also planted a few more chilli plants in front of the tomato vines. The tomato vines may be short, but they have thick, sturdy stems and are already putting on flowers.
The third side of the greenhouse has our physallis, chillis and peppers. These plants are very small, especially compared to many of our friends' plants which have been kept indoors. Our harvest may be later than their's, but hopefully it will be just as big. Perhaps next year we'll keep them inside a bit longer. Live and learn.

But the most exciting part of the weekend had to be the spinach harvest. We took up about half the plants, which gave us a half kilo spinach. Do you know how much half a kilo of spinach is?
That much! Spinach soup tonight, folks. And if it's good I'll certainly pass on the recipe. Keep your fingers crossed!
