As you will remember, we planted some seeds in the greenhouse about a month ago, to see if it would work as a winter garden. I'm sure you have been waiting with bated breath to hear the results. Well, I can now tell you.... the jury is still out.

The seeds have sprouted. Well, most of them. The lettuce has not shown itself at all, and the spinach is looking pretty thin.

But the radishes are doing well,

...and even the kale has made an appearance.

But despite this hopeful start, I'm still worried. You see, even though they're up, they're not really growing. I took pictures of the seedlings two weeks ago, and new ones today, and you couldn't see much difference. Maybe things take longer in the winter? Maybe we're not watering them enough? We added quite a bit of compost to the soil, so I'm pretty sure they're getting enough nutrients... I wish I had some experience to fall back on! If anyone out there knows anything, please share your wisdom!

You see I've put out the crushed egg shells, just in case some slugs take refuge in the warmth. They don't like crawling over the sharp edges of the shells, you know. The slugs are probably all hibernating for the winter, or whatever they do, but I want to give my little seedlings every chance in their slightly warm world.

But THIS I am excited about...

Looks like we will definitely be enjoying home-grown garlic next summer. Yum!
