I think we have seen the last of summer in southern Sweden. Temperatures are dropping, and so are the apples. Time to do something with all of our abundance, before it goes to waste.

We recently bought a cider press, and today was the day to put it to the test. We wanted to fill a 5 gallon jug (19 liters) so we needed two of these boxes filled with apples.

The first step was to quarter the apples, and put them through a grinder (which we luckily already had, from our sausage making hobby).

The mash then went into the press...
...and voilá, apple juice!

My dad arranged this clever system so that the juice went right into our jug, easy as pie.

It took three hours of hard work to fill this baby
Hope the results will be worth it!

We added a Camden tablet to kill the wild yeast, and tomorrow we'll add some store-bought scientifically-proven yeast (not taking any chances after all that hard work!) which will create alcohol. It will then brew for a month.
So turn in again in October to follow part 2 of the process!
